It was last night. Me and Lisa were craving for some food exploding
with grease juice, due to a stressful evening that we had to go through
in order to better our hungry, but productive life style. So we both
agreed to purchase sweet and sour chicken and veggie lo-mein from a
Chinese fast food chain that is located one block away from Lisa’s
apartment (on Troutman, off the Jefferson stop on the L train). We used to be their #1 customer last summer, so it was a refreshing memory flash back time for both of us. Sometimes it is not so bad idea to look back the past. Perfect beverage for this meal is Budwiser 40 oz. We brought these goods to Lisa’s apartment and satisfied
our stomach very soon. Of course, we both pour sriracha on lo-main to keep grease rush minimal. Nothing could complete that evening without Sheryl Crow performing in Apple computer.

Should you go to the New England area for clam chowder? Yes. I ate clam chowder in three states in that area, and all of them were delish. However, never, never eat at a place that is also a vagina innuendo. Unless it is a fish taco, because those are great.

This is a guy I met at Rosemary’s Greenpoint Tavern on Bedford and North 7th Street in Williamsburg Brooklyn.08-29-07_2310.jpg
I think his name is either UMBERTO or ALBERTO. I’m not sure, but he is Mexican. The boxes that he holds in his hands are small cases of Mexican candy that he was very excited about and passed out to everyone at the bar. I tried THREE different candies from him, and I will review them here:

pulparindo.jpg
1. PULPARINDO, this is tamarind candy that has a consistency that is a cross between Airheads and cookie dough. The taste is very INTENSE. Notice the HOT and SALTED feature of this candy, flavored by a sweet and tart fruit. Needless to say, I was pretty into it, but it is a candy I savor in small nibbles. Candy has a weird dried fruit smell to it, but I don’t mind.

2. PULPARINDO EXTRA PICANTE, very similar to the original pulparindo, except it is darker in color and has a lot more chili powder in it and ON IT. Eating this made me realize that the first one I ate was supposed to be spicy too, but I don’t remember it being that spicy. This EXTRA PICANTE one is certainly noticeably so!

bubulubu.jpg
3. BUBU LUBU, last but not least, it is BUBU LUBU. First of all it is called BUBU LUBU. Secondly, this is actually one of the least substantial and least satisfying candy bars I have ever eaten. This is what’s in it:

-strawberry flavored jelly

-marshmallow

-chocolate flavored coating

Okay? There’s a reason why that part is printed so small on the wrapper. I was mesmerized by Bubu Lubu until I ate it, and it was bad. This tastes bad. All I can say is BUBU LUBU.

these are some of my favorite cubes.  not surprisingly, they are edible:
(not in order of preference)

those watermelons grown as cubes
ham cubes
cheese cubes
jello cubes
ice cubes
weed cubes
sugar cubes
tofu

it is also fun to cube things that do not typically come as cubes.  you can cube melon (much better than the balls) and you can cube fruits and vegetables for kebabs.  cubed steak is good and you can cube mango to make it easy to eat.

i guess the moral of this story is that cubed food is the only way to go right now.  its more real than you could ever imagine.

j/k these are alfalfa cubes

I was making for my friends the other day a batch of my favorite sandwich: the avocado reuben.  At 7am I woke to make this damned delish treat when I realized that I could not make the Russian dressing because my ketchup had gone bad.  Who’s ketchup goes bad anyways?  And where to get ketchup anew at 7am?  I was nearly terrified.  I almost was disappointed really and truly.  My lunch and the lunch of others was really on the brink here.  So I set out to look at the condiments in my fridge and and spice cabinet all the while trying to prepare myself for the use of plain mayo on an otherwise devine and perfect sammy.  But let me tell you my sauce turned out to be better than the original.  Would I blog about a bad lunch?

Here’s what I used:
Hellmans  real mayonnaise
hickory smoked BBQ Sauce!  -so good
and Sriracha which added this really spicy element.  such a nice compliment to the avocado

the rest of the ingredients are:
toasted rye bread
sliced avocado
saurkraut
melted swiss cheese

We all really enjoyed our lunch.  For dessert I brought peeled grapefruit halves with sugar sprinkled on them.  It was a really light and sweet follow up.  no pics, sorry!

I beg you to make this sandwich for yourself and those close to you.  You will never regret.

As I was craving bologna pretty hard,  for dinner this evening, I went to the Bagelsmith on Bedford and North 7th, and got a bologna sandwich on a plain bagel with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, and onion. Oh man, the bologna was thin-sliced instead of that quarter inch thick stuff I was used to, and it was piled on an inch thick. Pretty amazing, like a delicate puff pastry, except with bologna. I ate half the sandwich and called it a night. With the dinner I had Mountain Dew and these chips:

I had never seen this flavor for potato chips before, so I gave them a try. As repulsive as “Cajun Crawtators” might sound to most people, these chips had very mild, if any, crawfish flavor. They were not even spicy. The chips were still golden yellow instead of having red powder all over them, like most spicy chips. So if you see these chips, don’t feel threatened, just expect disappointment, like I did.

Look at this man, he is made of corn. He is standing on top of a snowy mountain, but he is not cold. In fact, he is warm and full of joy in his heart. The air is cold and dark, small white flakes of ice fall from the sky, mysterious movements make their way towards him. But the Corn Man, he is unafraid. He feels no fear, no hate, no pain.

Look for us at the Deitch Project Art Parade, Saturday Sept. 8 sometime between 4pm and 5pm. We will look something like this:

Crazy huh?!

Helping us will be Ben Kinsley who will be putting together a marching band of chefs in the style of “Barf” from “You Can’t Do That on Television.”

So, I love to eat corn. For lunch this afternoon, I ate a WHOLE BOWL of corn (cereal bowl-sized). This is what the bowl looked like as I am typing this:

I took this photo with my cellphone.
I seasoned this bowl of corn with:

-kewpie mayo
-parmesan cheese
-ancho chili powder

As a result the flavor is sweet, creamy and a little spicy. Try it! You won’t regret it.

Jed’s birthday was August 2nd. We did karaoke in Redhook at this place called Hope and Anchor, where everyone was serious about karaoke, and so were we, but in a different way. Jed sang some Tina Turner and some Dreamgirls soundtrack, and I sang a little Mariah. The majority of the regulars at the karaoke place all left a little after we all got there, so we got to sing so many times! At the end of the night, we left and I surprised Jed with this cake I baked from scratch!!

These images were taken with my cellphone.

Look, he is so surprised!

In reality, I think he was less surprised and more AMAZED! I would not be able to accurately tell you the recipe, but if you want to try to make your own blueberry espresso dark chocolate cake at home, this is all you need to do:

1. Find a chocolate cake recipe that you trust.

2. Replace the normal chocolate with DARK CHOCOLATE.

3. Replace the water in the recipe (or a watery element) with good strong espresso.

4. Add about a cup of fresh blueberries to the cake batter right before you dump it into the baking pan.

5. Don’t forget the LOVE.

P.S.- After the cake had properly cooled (or cooled enough), I made a standard dark chocolate ganache, spread it on the cake, and decoratively placed the fresh blueberries on it before the ganache set.
